Vineyards and Wineries of Washington State

Posted by Penelope SanMateo on November 21st, 2008

Joining the growing number of wineries in the nation Washington has seen a 400 percent increase in the number of wineries in the past decade. With this increase has come the ability to buy great wines from this beautiful region that will satisfy the most discriminating taste.

Modern technology has made the process of making wine more sophisticated but the talent to produce great wine is all in the hands of the vintner who uses skills developed over generations of great wine makers sharing their knowledge to have some of the best wines now available at the wineries in Washington.

If you were in France and drinking wine in the regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy you would be at the same exact latitude of the wine country in Washington. With all the positive things going for wine in Washington being designated as American Viticulture Area is certainly a plus!

No crowds, no hurry, no pressure. Isn’t that what a vacation should be? You will experience the peace and pleasure of great countryside and great wine on a wine tour in Washington. Find the wine you like by going to the wine tastings offered by the different wineries. Find a great place to stay while in the area and make it the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation you have ever taken.

It may be dinner time at your house and what better way to set a relaxing environment than to have a wonderful glass of wine with dinner. Perhaps you are having something that a dry white will enhance or maybe you want a full bodied red to wake up your taste buds. Either can be obtained from one of the wineries in Washington.

It’s swirling, sniffing and slurping time when you get a good glass of wine. Swirl the beautiful wine in your glass to get the full color beauty and incorporate some air into the wine. Now it’s time to sniff, what a pleasure to smell the wonderful fragrance the wine gives off. With slurping you get the air mixed with the wine to bring out the full flavor of the choice you have made. Just remember to slurp gently and quietly, it still works and doesn’t drive your guests or family mad with the noise.

If just 1% of the wine grapes of Washington are grown on the eastern side of the Cascades then you would think that it was a poor area for wine growers. In fact, it is a great area where the soil is right, the climate perfect and the growing season long to provide fully ripened, fruit flavored grapes with good acid levels and pleasing aromatics. This area will certainly become more of a draw to vintners in the time to come.

The French, Italians and Germans began planting wine grapes in the state as early at 1825 for their own use when they were settling the area. Commercial planting of wine grapes didn’t being in Washington until the 1960’s with rapid expansion of the industry occurring in the mid-70’s. Now there are new wineries opening every couple of weeks for your enjoyment.

California Hiking - you will want to go every weekend!

Posted by Greg Everett on November 21st, 2008

There are a number of different types of trails to hike in California. During certain times of the year you can take your choice of mountain hiking or desert hiking. It will be so enjoyable that you may want to go for a week and try different trails or maybe you just have a weekend available. You can take your pick of hiking around rivers, glaciers, deserts, and the coastline and in the grasslands.

If you choose Mount Tallac you will have a 9.4 mile round trip hike with elevations reaching 9,735 ft. with a gain of 3,255 ft during the hike. Make sure you bring lots of water, you are working hard and your body needs to have the fluids replenished to sustain the healthy level you need for this type of hike. There are both wooded areas and flatlands for you to enjoy on this hike. It is considered to be one of the best hiking trails at Lake Tahoe where you will enjoy the beautiful views from the summit. When you get to the switchbacks toward the top you will experience a real change to hot, just be ready for it.

If you choose to hike Upper Yosemite Falls you will be on a 7.2 mile round trip hike with an elevation at the summit of 6,526 ft and an elevation gain of 2,700 ft. This hike is best if done from May to July because the waterfall is at its full force during this time and the view is beautiful. This hike will take you through a section of switchbacks through the forest and then you will enter the flat area of the trial with your first view of the falls. The mist from the falls will be heavy as you get closer and then you will encounter another set of switchbacks before the summit. These are very steep and the most difficult area to climb so be prepared to work hard here.

Enter the wonders of the desert with the heat and lack of water on the hike in Mosiac Canyon. Although the trail is just 2.5 miles round trip you will think you went further due to the climate conditions. After all, this is the hottest place in the US so it’s a challenge. Bring plenty of water to rehydrate yourself on this hike, you’ll need it. You might see some desert wildlife as you view the stunning designs nature created on the formations of the canyon walls.

Back to the mountains and this time it’s the really high hike. Prepare for Mt. Shasta, the most challenging trail in California. The trial is 12 miles round trip and the summit is 14,179 ft with an elevation gain of 7,259 ft. You will work on this trail to see the beauty. The time to plan this hike is from May to mid July due to the unpredictable weather in the spring and the lava rocks and rolling boulders that come crashing down the mountain after the snow melt in the summer. Not only is this more than a hike, you will have issues with altitude sicknes if you are not careful so make sure you go with a partner for safety and practical reasons. Read all you can about this hike before you begin, it’s not one for the faint of heart.

Going on a hike on Mt. Shasta will provide you with a different view and challenge. You will need sunscreen, sunglasses, an ice axe and shelter. Since you won’t have much warning if the weather is going to turn on you take the shelter to offer protection when, and if, you need it. Bring along your crampons, helmet, summit pass, and winter boots and wear extra layers of cloths, and again, plenty of water. The snow around Helen’s Lake is contaminated by human and animal urine so don’t plan on drinking melted snow or ice…nasty!

Half Dome is a 16 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of 4,800 ft to the elevation of 8,842. This is a great hike for between late May and early October. Because of the location, view and degree of difficulty people from all over the world come to hike at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. This is a day hike that challenges you so if you aren’t prepared with a great degree of fitness and lots of experience pass on this one. The climb through the switchbacks is rocky so be careful not to injure an ankle. If you reach the top of Nevada Falls (the halfway point) you will want to assess your skills and ability to continue on as well as adjust to the altitude change. To continue on be prepared to have a very steep, excruciatingly long climb to the back of the Half Dome rock. This is a most difficult climb with more switchbacks continually assaulting your body. If you have done your research you know about the Half Dome cables but you can’t know the shock and fear experienced once you are in front of them until you are there. Now you need to reevaluate your physical condition to see if you are up to the risks involved in continuing up. The view from there is terrific with Yosemite Valley below, but make sure you are ready for this type of challenge before you even begin the hike. It isn’t for the weak or physically unprepared.

Finding The Best Face Painting Book

Posted by Anthony Galz on November 20th, 2008

When looking for the best face painting book, its important to identify first what you want to get from it. The usefulness of face painting books really depends on whether you are a beginner or pro. This article will demonstrate how to look for the best resources for those who are just starting out and want to gain more skills.

If you are a beginner, complicated designs and instructions are not really for you. On the other hand, advanced beginners can benefit from those kinds of books. The first thing you might want to do is find a general face painting book. This way you can have a broad understanding of what face painting is all about. A typical face painting book for beginners includes:

- A general definition or introduction to face painting -Basic tools and materials -Basic design steps -Easy-to-follow samples

For beginners, look for face painting books with lots of pictures for your to follow. Picture illustrations are so much easier to follow than when viewing a bunch of instructional words. Once you already have a general idea about face painting, try it out! One way to grow is to start experimenting and eliminating that fear of mistakes.

Proceed only to the next step if you have mastered the basic skills already. Look for a more specific face painting book. For example, if you find that you are more into animal face painting, find books that cater only to that particular theme; if you like to paint flowers, bees or birds, you can look for face painting books that relate to those designs like those on nature themes. This way, you are able to focus and build on your strengths. Here are some examples of intermediate books:

- Halloween face painting - animal face painting - special effects face painting

The third step is to find a face painting book that shows you additional techniques you have not used before. Even if you are already great in painting a particular theme or design, technical face painting books can give your works of art that extra kick. Here are some new things you can learn from a more advanced face painting book:

- applying glitter, body jewelry and other props - creating the illusion of feathers and fur - how to place colors side by side without smudging - how to face paint in lesser time - how to face paint on children - how to create a professional face painter’s portfolio - more advice on safety like how to get insurance for your sideline work - where to look for inspiration - where to find the best tools and materials as well as other sources of information

There may even be more topics covered in other advanced face painting book. For the beginner, finding the best face painting book means learning basics and gradually climbing up to more professional books. All you need is perseverance and the right book to start with.

Seasonal Feeding of Your Koi

Posted by Pamella Neely on November 19th, 2008

Sitting by a peaceful koi pond is a lovely stress reliever in the spring and summer; until it is time to feed and care for koi in the fall and winter. With a little bit of knowledge, understanding and a thermometer the stress of feeding outdoor koi is minimal.

Water temperature determines when and what to feed outdoor koi. During warm temperatures koi grow and build up reserves for winter. Koi need more protein during the summer months because so much of their growth takes place during the warm season. They devour their food voraciously and can be amusing to feed by hand since they are particularly social creatures. A seasonal feeding schedule needs to be followed in spring and fall which includes wheat germ and a lower protein diet.

In spring and fall, a seasonal feeding schedule needs to be followed, which includes a lower protein diet and wheat germ. When the cooler weather arrives and the water temperature drops to 70 degrees, it is time to start altering the routine. At that point, a wheat germ based food needs to mixed in with your summer koi food.

You need to keep a close check on water temperature and when the temperature begins to drop in the fall, getting below 60 degrees, use the wheat germ food only. Their metabolism slows when water temperatures get below 55 degrees and their feeding needs comparatively drops. Once the temperatures reaches 50 degrees or below, discontinue feeding altogether until spring when temperatures rise again. Remember the 70-60-50 rule. At 70 degrees, feed low protein and wheat germ. At 60 degrees, feed wheat germ only. At 50, stop all feeding until temperatures rise again in the spring.

Monitoring the weather as cold fronts and other weather systems come through is useful to determining when to end feeding. If the weather will be changing in the days after the feeding, stop feeding them just before the temperature change. Koi can not process food at colder temperatures and unprocessed food will begin to decay causing potential infection and disease. A mild antibiotic added to the last feedings of winter will help keep the fish healthy during the wintry months when the bacteria are low and the pond water’s balance is not in harmony.

If this all sounds a bit high maintenance, automatic koi feeders will do the work for you. While they won’t load themselves with the seasonal food needed, they will dispense the food you load into them at specific times and intervals. Research shows that it is better to feed koi small meals several times a day rather than distributing one large feeding. An automatic koi feeder also insures that the food is not wasted and the fish are not overeating.

Though the automatic feeders are convenient, they can be expensive. They range in price from $50 to over $200. They range from some rather unattractive ones on the lower end of the price range to beautiful pagoda style ones at the higher end of the price range. The beautiful ones can both feed and enhance the look of your pond. However, the lower price range feeders will still serve the purpose and protect your fish when you are away on vacation, or just make maintaining them so much easier.

Once spring arrives, the 70-60-50 rule reverses to become the 50-60-70 rule. The process is simply to begin including wheat germ and low protein foods until the water temperature rises. Your koi will be energetic and ready to bring you the good luck Asia values throughout the summer months.

Delight in the Creativity of Jewelry Beading

Posted by Ethan O. Tanner on November 19th, 2008

Creating your personalised beadwork jewelry symbolizes an innovative hobby that allows you to develop unequaled art objects for yourself, family and friends. It is an appreciated avocation that can be expanded into a home occupation. Here is how you are able to get going.

If you inquired yourself “could not I create that myself?” When you searched through and through rows of bead bracelets, necklaces or earrings at a stylish boutique, the response follows “certainly”. Beadwork represents an originative and amusing hobby that not alone will have you produce extraordinary, handmade items of jewelry, but will in addition to comprise a great source of bighearted ideas for family and friends.

The first step would be to find a good local bead shop. There are wonderful mail order catalogs and websites that will sell you all the supplies, look for a business that provides support and advice. A retail store might also offer a number of beginners’ classes that would help you learn basic techniques (if there is no bead shop in your town, some introductory books such as The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Beading will have to do).

Start with a simple project, such as a bracelet or basic necklace, and do not go overboard with expensive beads and findings (clasps, hooks, etc.). You might be wanting to use Swarovski crystal, sterling silver and semi-precious beads right now, but you can work up to that later. Some stores will even offer packaged starter kits that include a beading board (which helps you with project layout and measurements), some basic tools, beads, wire, findings and a how-to-book.

You should then set up your “beading space” ? preferably a respectable, well-lit area. You might wish to purchase an effective lamp, maybe one included with an enlarging lense. Remember, you will be stringing up many quite little objects! Be sure you possess good deal of containers to accommodate different types and colors of beads. Nothing will spoil your pleasure of beading like having to hunt for a individual bead in a miscellaneous pile. Beading shops will sell you distinguishable storage systems (including beading bags for the beader-on-the-go), but you are able to also experiment with inexpensive plastic containers meant to hold small hardware or fishing tackle.

Well, there you are ready for your first bead jewelry project! Don’t forget to protect your beading space from curious cats and toddlers. Happy beading, and have fun wearing your hand-crafted jewelry!

What Kind Of Fruit Can I Grow Indoors?

Posted by Jim Hofman on November 18th, 2008

Most experienced gardeners are aware of certain trees that have been designed to grow successfully indoors. In particular, indoor fruit trees have gained in popularity and prominence. These dwarf citrus varieties are appealing to any level of gardener and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment when the tree produces a bountiful crop of fruit.

If you’re experienced with indoor fruit trees, you’ve heard of the Meyer lemon, perhaps the most well known tree of this type. The Meyer lemon is perfect for container growing as it is hearty, easy care, and prolific. Building on the positive reputation of the Meyer, other varieties of citrus trees are now being introduced, all appropriate for container gardeners, and suited for indoor growing. Let’s take a look at a few.

Key Lime - Sometimes called the bartenders lime, key limes are suited quite well for container growing. A key lime is just a bit sweeter than the average lime you’ll find at your grocery store, and smaller. These trees are just as easy to grow indoors as the Meyer lemon.

Ponderosa Lemon - Maybe they called this variety the Ponderosa because everything is big on a ponderosa. And that’s the case with these lemons. They’re positively huge, weighing in at as much as two pounds each. Let them grow and ripen on the tree and don’t be tempted to pick them too soon. Don’t worry, the branches will hold the fruit!

Washington Navel Orange - If you didn’t think oranges could be grown indoors, guess again. This unique dwarf citrus produces fruit in the winter. The fruit itself is extremely enjoyable … seedless and sweet!

Calamondin Tree - Calamondins are very common in souteast Asia, where they are sometimes grown as an ornamental. Their fruit has been described as a cross between a lime and orange, not surprising because the calamondin is claimed by both the lime and orange lineage. As for their taste, yes, you guessed it … a combination between lime and orange.

Fingered Citron - Probably the most unique variety of indoor fruit tree we’ve seen, the fingered citron produces pods of fruit that look like a person’s hand. We were struck by the delightful fragrance of this tree, and also by its prolific nature. The citron is similar to lemon, but just a bit milder.

These examples are only a few of several dozen indoor fruit trees. If you’re a beginning gardener, or know a beginning gardener, these trees are perfect. They’re affordable, easy to care for, and will instill confidence in pride within those who own them. These and other indoor citrus trees are available to be shipped year around, no matter the temperature.

Building A Killer Model Train Table

Posted by Bill Murphy on November 17th, 2008

You’ve finally decided that you want to build your own model railway and the train table that it will need to sit on. Often the first choice for a layout will be a table top or a sheet of plywood. Although this may seem the easiest way, it definitely has its restrictions.

The biggest concern is that everything has to be on top and nothing can be below ground level. This is when most modelers see the benefits of building a table tailor made just for any scenery or landscape they might choose.

You need to start by planning the size, weight and design of your layout. If one section has more scenery, it will need more support. An L-girder support system is the choice for model layouts. It can give you all the strength needed as well as being very adaptable.

Although L-girder bench work is very strong, it is still inexpensive. It’s very functional and goes together easily. It consists of a platform of girders, cross braces and joists that all work together. Generally the joists are 18 inches apart but they don’t always have to be evenly spaced.

Try and use care when selecting the lumber for both the support as well as the actual tabletop. Obviously you’ll want flat pieces that will carry your roadbed without problem. Take care in the support pieces as well. Cheaper grades of lumber will warp over time, and I don’t have to tell you what that could mean to your layout.

If your layout is larger that 4 x 8 you should still keep the pieces to that size to make them easier to transport in case you want to move your layout. Use wood screws from underneath to assemble the bench work cross members as well as the support risers.

By doing this you will spare the scenery if you happen to loose a screw. Try not to split the wood by using screws that are too large or by placing them in the wrong spots.

Carefully locate any cuts you want to make either for access or for scenery, and make sure these fit into your overall support scheme. There are varying schools of thought as to whether to saw your holes in the tabletop after the track is in place or before.

Personally, I think it is better to do it all beforehand, as the very act of sawing, regardless of the quality of your tool, can possibly send enough vibrations through your layout to loosen track and ballast, making your previously smoothly running operation into a clackety-clack mess. Just my 2 cents.

Tabletop layouts tend to be from 48 to 55 inches high. This is adjustable and if you’ve bolted it together instead of using nails or screws, you can change it with just a wrench. It’s best if you can see the tops of highest hills and grades without needing a step stool.

Building a killer train table is nothing if not pre-planning. Take some time with yours and you’ll be most pleased!

Model Trains A New Hobby? Model Railroading Clubs Can Help!

Posted by Bill Murphy on November 16th, 2008

Most hobbies have associated clubs where you can meet other people interested in the same things, and learn more about the hobby. Model railroading is no different. There are hundreds of clubs around the world where model train enthusiasts meet to discuss the hobby and learn from one another.

Some of these clubs even specialize in specific things. Some specialize on prototyping real life railroads, others focus on certain scales, etc. All clubs have one thing in common- their love for model trains and their desire to learn more about it.

Whether you’re just starting out with model railroading or you’ve been around the hobby for many years, you’ll learn a lot by joining a club. And if you’ve got some experience under your belt, they would likely learn a lot from you as well.

There are many sources online for model railraods, and many popular railroading clubs, some of which include:

rcsource.hobbypeople.net/link/train001.htm www.tfs.net/~jashaw/rrclubs/clubs.html www.archaeolink.com/model_railroads.htm

Whether you’re interested in protoyping real-world railway lines, collecting antique or hard-to-find equipment, or just setting up a simple layout to enjoy with your kids, you’ll find a club that will suit your needs.

You might want to check with your local club to see is they are expecting to do any upcoming demonstrations. They often will have exhibits at fairs and other events.

By attending an event, you can talk to some of the members in person, and will likely be impressed by what you see at the demonstation!

Karaoke: Making Stars in Your Neighborhood

Posted by Horace Jurdon on November 16th, 2008

If music soothes the savage beast, then the karaoke phenomenon can be credited with pleasing party animals all over the world.

Everyone wants to be in the spotlight, even if it’s for just a little while. Through song, we can relieve daily stresses and leave the rat race behind. Therapeutic stress relief aside, singing is just plain fun. It’s a great activity to share with families and friends, particularly through mini concerts or group jam sessions.

When translated, karaoke means “empty orchestra”. The term is derived from two Japanese words: Kara, which means “empty” and Oke, short for “okesutora”. Karaoke entertainment systems supply pre-recorded musical scores of popular songs without singing. Karaoke performers follow lyrics on a video screen as the music plays on, providing the words they need to sing along.

Karaoke music and parties have fully swept Asia, and is now making a solid presence in North America. Since the first virtual concert machine was introduced in 1970’s Japan, karaoke parties have favorite pastimes for music aficionados of all stripes. Karaoke became so popular, the media adopted the term to use on occasions when a live performance was substituted by pre-recorded or “canned” music.

This history of Japan is rich with artistic elements, including music. Traditional Japanese music is present in ancient culture, mythology and history. Japanese Samurais are even known to use dancing, singing and music as an element in their training and education.

Tracing the history of karaoke will take us back to the early 1970s, when a nightclub singer by the name of Daisuke Inoue performed regularly in a Utagoe Kissa, a Japanese bar. Inoue was so popular that fans would regularly ask for recordings of his music that they could sing along with. Inoue saw the potential and created a tape recorder that played a song when a 100 yen coin was inserted. Back in the 1970s, 100 yen would buy about two lunches, so it was a fairly steep price for a single song. Still, the combination of old-time jukebox and future karaoke machine proved to be a phenomenal hit in Japanese clubs. Inoue decided that he would lease the machines to stores and bars instead of selling them, so that the owners would not have to purchase new songs on their own.

The development of the karaoke machine held such social importance, Daisuke Inoue was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. His award was based on his ability to provide “an entirely new way for people to learn to tolerate each other”.

The act of singing karaoke is known as “Karaoke Time”, and has been a popular form of entertainment in East Asia since the early 1980’s. The karaoke phenomenon quickly spread to other parts of the world, and its popularity soon reached record heights. Before long, the karaoke craze reached North American shores, took the entire continent by storm and opened brand new opportunities for enterprising individuals.

The new entertainment import industry flourished in the Western world. Enterprising Americans were quick to see the investment potential in a brand new type of entertainment that provided cool, relaxing fun, as well as bringing people together in a tolerant, patient manner. Karaoke bars and nightclubs known as “KTV boxes” opened across North America, providing eager would-be performers with fresh new venues, software and equipment.

Since karaoke first reached the shores of North America, people have regarded the pastime with increasing regard. While few American bars offer karaoke seven nights a week, as many in Asia do, these clubs have upgraded their equipment and replaced those tiny standalone machines that were popular two decades ago. Performers and audience members are able to sing along to song lyrics shown television screens placed throughout the club, and many clubs provide big screen TVs for viewing lyrics.

The karaoke sensation has also entered our homes. From inexpensive children’s versions to high-end machines, home karaoke systems can be connected to a pre-existing entertainment center and families can join in the fun. Karaoke music can be downloaded from the Internet, and fans can sing along with their computers if they do not have a personal karaoke machine available.

When your inner party animal needs a little soothing, try belting out a few karaoke tunes. It’s a great way to have fun, relieve stress and get your fifteen minutes of fame.
